Is really necessary to have cleanings? I regularly brush and floss my teeth; is that enough?
As you probably know, it is not enough. As per the page, brushing and flossing cannot eliminate the calculus, or tartar, that accumulates around the root of the teeth. Calculus is basically 100% bacterial calcified into solid, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria to stick to it. As you can imagine, the gum around calculi are usually inflamed. Periodontal disease usually follows if not treated in a timely manner.
Studies have shown that there is a link between periodontal disease and other major ailments like heart disease and stroke. The oral bacteria enter the bloodstream through inflamed gum tissue, causing systemic problem. By doing a deep cleaning on a patient, study has shown that he/she is 31% less likely to get a heart attack, and 15% less likely to get a stroke. (Reuters Health 19/4/2012). So what are you waiting for? Have a new resolution for better health ahead, and call your dentist for an oral evaluation! Copyright Macau Dentist 2013
